The Jeddah Islamic Port is the oldest and busiest of all the Kingdom’s ports. It is the principal commercial port and the main port of entry for pilgrims on their way to the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah. King Fahd has given special attention to this port to ensure pilgrims’ comfort. The Jeddah Islamic Port has 54 quays and is wide enough for 135 ships to anchor simultaneously. All the Kingdom’s major ports, including the Jeddah Islamic Port, are equipped with modern tugboats. They are able to anchor ships, extinguish fires, combat oil pollution and rescue ships in distress. In 2000/2001, the volume of cargo handled at the Jeddah Islamic Port reached 23,011,579 tons.
