In 1975, there was no significant milk or dairy production in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Total production supplied 5% of the local demand; in 1985 the Kingdom was not only meeting the self-sufficiency limit of milk and dairy products and their derivatives but was also exporting part of its production to neighboring countries. In 1997 the Kingdom’s production of dairy products amounted to 816,000 tons.
