Civil aviation occupies a special place in any account of the Kingdom’s transportation systems. Saudi Arabian Airlines, the Kingdom’s flag carrier, is now one of the world’s leading airlines. The airline has in its fleet today more than 100 aircraft (including a number of Boeing 747s, Boeing 777s and Airbuses), which carried 10.6 million passengers and 218,000 tons [198 million kg] of cargo in 1990. By early 1999, Saudi Arabian Airlines had 24 local and 52 international stations and was transporting 12.7 million passengers annually and 279,000 tons [253 million kg] of cargo.
