King Fahd orders subsidies for the price of barley
Jeddah, 12th June 2000

The Kingdom will subsidize barley at a price of SR 20 per bag of 50 kilograms in line with an order by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz.

The royal order is prompted by keenness of the Saudi monarch and the Crown Prince to reduce the problems of cattle owners caused by scarcity of pastures and the rise in the price of both barley and fodder as well as to preserve the country’s animal livestock.

Minister of Agriculture and Water Dr. Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz bin Muammar said last night that the subsidy will remain as long as the causes for its introduction remain.

He said the royal order also included cancellation of the seaport fees on unloading imported barley and the granting of permission for a greater number of tradesmen to import barley in the interest of competition.
