A report on Saudi relief for Kosovo
Riyadh, 13th June, 1999

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had been sending one plane shipment relief per day to Kosovo since the inception of its air bridge nearly two months ago, it was reported here today. Following a meeting of the Saudi Joint Relief Committee for the relief of the people of Kosovo, chaired by Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz, Minister of Interior, and General Supervisor of the Committee, the Chairman of the Saudi Red Crescent and Chairman of the Committee Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdul Aziz Al-Suweilem said the meeting reviewed a report on the performance of the Saudi field teams in Albania and Macedonia. He told the SPA that the number of air shipments sent by the Kingdom totalled 41 cargo planes, carrying shipments worth SR 40 million. The air bridge lifted 696 tonnes worth SR four million of diversified relief materials, he said, adding that work is underway to send 2000 tonnes of dates worth SR seven million by sea in addition to large quantities of milk.

He said more than 14,000 individuals were sponsored by Saudi organizations. He added that the Saudi relief teams were providing assistance to more than 17,880 refugees in a number of sites. He said the Committee was supervising 17 resort sites set up to extend all kinds of relief services in Albania and Macedonia. More than 42,000 blankets worth 1,6 million were being distributed among the refugees, he said, adding that more than 110,000 booklets on Islam in the Albanian language were being distributed to them. He concluded his report by saying that the total cash donations from the Committee totalled to about SR 35 million.
