The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) was founded in May 1971, following agreement of Muslim leaders at their summit meeting in Morocco in September 1969 that such an organization should be formed.

The OIC objectives were defined as the following:

• promoting Islamic solidarity
• consolidating cooperation between Member States in the economic, social, cultural and scientific fields and arranging consultations among Member States belonging to international organizations
• endeavoring to eliminate racial discrimination and segregation and to eradicate colonialism in all its forms
• taking necessary measures to support international peace and security, founded upon justice
• coordinating all efforts to protect the Holy Places and supporting the struggle of the Palestinians to regain their rights and liberate their land
• strengthening the struggle of all Muslims in order to safeguard their dignity, independence and national rights
• creating an atmosphere conducive to the promotion of cooperation and understanding among Member States and other countries
