The diplomatic role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under King Fahd has been extensive and derives from the unique place that Saudi Arabia occupies in the Arab and Islamic world. Five times each day, Muslims turn towards the Holy City of Makkah to pray. This act symbolizes the unity of faith and purpose that Islam calls for and which King Fahd has always promoted. The Kingdom provides a focal point for the view that we all live in an interdependent world. In such a world, it is in the interests of the developed nations to help the developing world with technology and freedom to trade, so that they may prosper; it is in the interests of both oil producers and oil consumers that the finite oil reserves should be managed in a way which is fair to both parties; and it is in the interests of world peace that the international community applies fair and consistent criteria in judging and acting in instances of conflict between nations. These have been the guiding principles underpinning King Fahd’s redoubtable diplomatic efforts over the years.
