Arising from this philosophy, and as a result of subsidies and incentives, the great transformation from a traditional to a modern agricultural system has been accomplished, at the level both of individual farmers and of large agricultural companies. In addition, the Kingdom has seen the development and modernization of research and agricultural training centers, running in parallel with the rapid development and expansion of agricultural productivity. In the course of King Fahd’s reign, Saudi Arabia has been able to attain self-sufficiency in one of the world’s major strategic crops: wheat. In 1978, the Kingdom’s wheat production amounted to 3,000 tons. By 1999 it had increased to 1.8 million tons.
